The Grand Canyon, Las Vegas – Top Tips

When you’re planning a trip to Las Vegas you really should spend some time outside the casinos and make the most of the amazing places to visit in the area. One of the most popular tourist places for visitors to Las Vegas is the Grand Canyon, which is still a fair journey away so make sure you allow a full day for the trip. The distance from the Strip to the Canyon is around 120 miles and will take around three or four hours to complete, depending on traffic. If you are lucky your hotel will offer tours to the Grand Canyon, and if they don’t they can probably suggest somewhere for you to contact so that you don’t have to do all the driving yourself. The rough terrain for much of the journey makes it one of the more tiring places to visit, but the stunning panoramic scenery makes it very well worth the effort.

Of course, if finances aren’t too much of an issue you could always opt for the speed, convenience, and sheer thrill of a helicopter ride. The cost for this kind of trip averages out at around $200 per person from Las Vegas, but the experience is almost unbeatable. The sight of the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and the Canyon itself from the air are second to none, and when your helicopter manoeuvres itself to hover inside the canyon you will appreciate the outstanding beauty of the area. Overall a helicopter trip will last in the region of 3 hours, so it’s not a cheap option, but you can arrange much cheaper flights to the canyon in a prop aeroplane with local flight operators. Your hotel should be able to put you in touch with operators out of McCarran airport.

For those that just don’t have the money or time to spend on a day out at the Canyon you have a chance to get a free view, if you have flown in from Europe. All you need to do is make sure you get one of the places on the right-hand side of the plane with a half decent chance of getting a view out of a window, and of course you also need a clear day! Of course, if you forgot to complete your details with the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation you may get an opportunity for a view sooner than you expected as you could be heading straight back home on another plane!
